Shadow reckoning was one of the great arts of the ancient Greeks, and was used extensively by early mathematicians, especially in measuring the height of inaccessible objects.
Class VII carried out an activity of ‘Similar Figures’ as taught in Pre-Algebra. This is within the Mathematics GCE curriculum. The students of this class already had prior knowledge of finding the unknown sides by using similar figures through proportionality methods. This was a project to have them find the unknown sides of an object with the help of its shadow.
Students (in groups) measured the height of tall objects like a tree, a pole, and their own heights, indirectly.
This activity ended with a Q&A session.
