To commemorate the historic passing of the Pakistan Resolution (1940), both campuses of The Science School enthusiastically participated in a series of activities between 21st March and 28th March, 2019. The week-long celebration of Pakistan securing freedom focused on strengthening the students’ personal connection to their beloved country. Students’ academic and creative prowess was employed and displayed in engaging activities which represented Pakistan’s culture.
Islamabad and Rawalpindi campus, both, commenced the celebration with a flag designing and wearing competition. Students of all grades were encouraged to don green and white apparel and accessories, made with an innovative use of material, including (but not limited to) cloth. Each section actively began designing and combining crepe, glazed, and chart paper; a range of fabric; drawing and painting symbols; cutting and pasting items in unique ways. The result was a creative display of headbands, shirts, bracelets, masks, capes, exceptional headgears, painted faces and all smiles.

Grade 8 and 9 took to the ICT labs to research the Balakot airspace violation of Feb 2019. With the integration of the subject of History, a timeline of events was organized. Hence, students fathomed the reasons and incidents that led to Pakistan forces to respond in order to deter any possible future threats. Moreover, the research and timelines organised the necessary information based on which they wrote a formal report in their English and Urdu classes. Ultimately, during the final days of the week, the timelines were displayed inside classes and in the corridors, where students gave presentations to a panel of judges. They successfully answered questions on their investigation of the event, and presented their knowledge.
Keeping in line with Pakistan’s love for sports, Grade 10 and 11 competed in a cricket tournament. Both batches turned the school ground into an arena of energy and remarkable skill.
Meanwhile in the classrooms, the students adopted the skills and concepts developed in Design and Technology, and Science to successfully design kites of various shapes and sizes. The merger of D&T and Science led them to hold an inquiry into academic questions such as: which materials, and what dimensions would be suitable for a long flight of the kite; how the wind speed and direction impact it; which thread and design would ensure a smooth sail, and which forces would play into action to make it so. Students were divided onto groups of four to explore scientific and technical concepts by designing one kite each. The final green and white products not only had to be aerodynamically sound but were also splashed with passionate slogans and cultural patterns.
On the final day of the commemoration, a competition was held. For the first time, the students had to put their concepts and design to the test. A panel of three judges took rounds asking questions regarding the concepts of aerodynamics which they explored. These questions included how aerodynamics influence the flight of the kite, which forces are important for it to remain stable in-flight, and how and why material selection (such as that of a thread or paper) would lead it to flying successfully or tearing; and which would help it gain height or lead it to plummet. The groups of students testing these kites under a carefully controlled environment, confidently answered technical questions, and came together to appreciate and cheer each other’s work.
A panel of three teachers scoured all sections of Grade 5 to 9 to scout for talented singers. The auditions witnessed a large turnout of students eager to showcase their vocal range. Finally, the shortlisted contestants staged enchanting solo and group performances, singing patriotic melodies that professed love for the country.
During the week, the students of The Science School came adorned in green and white to pay tribute to the country’s flag. Moreover, the Islamabad and Rawalpindi campus was decorated with the same colours in a myriad of ways, including banners that stood tall bearing the reminder: 23rd March to 14th August – A Time to Celebrate Pakistan.
